What is a cryptocurrency wallet?

Six illustrated ideas explain how a wallet protects control of your assets and what receiving, backing up, and checking a transaction involve.

A 3D wallet protecting a key while connected to blockchain assets

A wallet protects control, not coins

BCH and CashTokens are recorded on the blockchain rather than stored inside your phone or computer. Your wallet manages the keys that control those assets and uses them to build and sign transactions.

A 3D public receiving address separated from a private key in a vault

Share an address, never a private key

A receiving address is public delivery information you can give to a payer. A private key is the unique key to the vault: keep it inside a wallet you trust and never paste it into a website, message, or support conversation.

A 3D offline recovery phrase backup with cloud and camera storage prohibited

The recovery phrase backs up the whole wallet

A recovery phrase can usually recreate the full set of private keys. Copy it as your wallet instructs and store it offline. Never screenshot it, upload it to the cloud, or give it to anyone; CashLink usually cannot recover a lost backup.

A 3D transaction moving between wallets through a network and producing a receipt

Signing and broadcasting produce a TXID

Before sending, check the network, recipient, asset, amount, and fee. The wallet signs with your private key and broadcasts the transaction, producing a public TXID. It is a receipt identifier, not a password or proof of ownership.

A blockchain explorer is read-only

Enter a TXID or address into a trusted explorer to view transaction details, its block, and confirmations. An explorer cannot sign, reverse, or recover a transaction, and other people may also see activity associated with a public address.

A 3D BCH asset and CashToken sharing one blockchain path into a compatible wallet

BCH and CashTokens share one chain

CashTokens are assets on the Bitcoin Cash chain. Receive them at a token-aware address supported by your wallet. Even a CashToken-only transfer still needs a small amount of BCH for the network fee.

This is a Legacy BCH address

Legacy addresses can make the network and purpose harder to verify. We recommend converting it to CashAddr with the on-site tool. If you have verified the recipient, you may allow this submission once.
